Botox, a trade name for Botulinum type A, is commonly used to combat the effects of aging. It works best on frown lines and crow's feet. When doctors inject Botox into the facial muscles, it blocks nerve impulses, preventing muscles from contracting. The result: fewer creases. According to the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, the average Botox procedure takes about 30 minutes and doesn't require any downtime. Discomfort is typically minimal. In 2006, the average Botox treatment cost $417 -- much less than a face lift, which averages around $6500 -- but Botox is a temporary solution. Results last four to six months.
