Pigmentation-type birthmarks – These can include various types of birthmarks including moles (congenital nevi), Coffee-cream spots, and Mongolian spots. Mole is a nonspecific term for nevus, which is a pigmented skin spot. While most moles pose no health risks, some large nevi may have cancerous effects later on during one’s life. Coffee-cream spots are caused by too much pigment in the skin. They do not fade away, but do not require treatment. Mongolian spots are flat, slate blue-grey patches commonly found in children. These birthmarks usually disappear when children reach school age. So they aren't really considered birthmarks to me.

I think that mark on my back is one of those coffee stain marks. That sounds like a good term.
My brother had mongolian spots on his lower back as a baby and I thought it was weird. My mother thought he was bruised and was worried but luckily they went away by the time he was 1 or 2 (he is 16 now and spot free!)

My baby (9 month) daughter has one on her lower back. But it's red. I'm not sure if its a Pigmentation birthmark or a hemangioma.

I do have a birth mark over my left ear, it is a mole and these days it just started growing in thickness, donno what it is called but looks like a swelling which is black in color. I even have one mole on my head which is always confused by many for lice.

I had some birth marks removed because they were pre-cancerous. I had already skin cancer, and my dermatologist keeps an eye on me for every little thing that might change. So it was a preventive measure.

What made a birthmark precancerous? Did it change its character? Most birthmarks do not become precancerous. If they did then ALL discolorations of the skin should be removed because they might change and become cancer!

How did the doctor explain this? I am curious!

Sagemother has a good point!
When I started hearing about cancerous moles, I worried about the one I was born with. I also freak out at the freckles I've had that started forming on my face.
I'd love to know too...
