Default Body Contouring surgery after Weight Loss

Following significant weight loss, including that achieved by diet, exercise, gastric bypass, or gastric banding, the patient typically has significant areas of skin excess. This commonly includes excess skin of the abdomen, breasts, arms, and thighs. Plastic surgeons address these problems with many different potential options, including abdominoplasty (tummy tuck), breast lift or reduction (or in the case of males, gynecomastia excision), upper arm lift, medial thigh lift and lower body lift. These patients may also be candidates for other procedures including liposuction and facelift. Your plastic surgeon can discuss with you the various surgical options to optimize your appearance following weight loss.

Thanks for that information about body contouring after weight loss. It's a shame that a person can go through all the trouble of losing weight to get stuck with excess skin.

If someone loses like 40 pounds would they need some type of body contouring or don't they have as much excess skin.

What happens to all the skin they take off? Doesn't the body tend to return to the presurgery shape even if the size doesn't return?

I don't know of this process until I have read this thread. Thanks for this very wonderful information. I am sure after giving birth I will undergo weight loss and will definitely have excess skin on different parts of my body.

I watched an Oprah show where a woman who once weighed over 500 lbs and had lost almost 300 needed this type of body contouring. I can certainly see how this woman would be considered a great candidate for this type of surgery.

i have a friend who used to be like 297 lbs. he had a mild heart attack and saw things different.

but he took his time. he made it a point to lose 10-15 lbs a year. slow and steady. now, he looks great and he didn't have to get any surgery of sorts. the skin is a tissue - if it can grow, it can also 'shrink'. of course, if it comes to it, i'm all for surgeries like these.

Default What I think is....

any quick weight loss, that leaves that much excess skin "hanging around" cannot be safe. Lose it slowly.

I have two friends, both in their later 50s, who had gastric bypass and came out of it without loose skin.
