Botox, a trade name for Botulinum type A, is commonly used to combat the effects of aging. It works best on frown lines and crow's feet. When doctors inject Botox into the facial muscles, it blocks nerve impulses, preventing muscles from contracting. The result: fewer creases. According to the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, the average Botox procedure takes about 30 minutes and doesn't require any downtime. Discomfort is typically minimal. In 2006, the average Botox treatment cost $417 -- much less than a face lift, which averages around $6500 -- but Botox is a temporary solution. Results last four to six months.

What Is BOTOX ® Cosmetic?
BOTOX ® Cosmetic is a therapeutic agent derived from the bacterium, Clostridium Botulinum; Also known as Botulinum Toxin Type A. The brand BOTOX ® Cosmetic is produced in controlled laboratory conditions and given in extremely small therapeutic doses originally for the treatment of blepharospasm (eye spasm) and strabismus (misalignment of the eye). BOTOX ® Cosmetic Purified Neurotoxin Complex is a vacuum-dried form of purified botulinum toxin type A and is being investigated for several conditions associated with overactive muscle activity. |

How Does BOTOX ® Cosmetic Work?
Normally, your brain sends electrical messages to your muscles so that they can contract and move. The electrical message is transmitted to the muscle by a substance called acetylcholine. BOTOX ® Cosmetic works to block the release of acetylcholine and, as a result, the muscle does not receive the message to contract. This means that the muscle spasms or movements that cause wrinkling, stop or are greatly reduced after using BOTOX ® Cosmetic. Patients sometimes refer to the effects of the injection to their area of treatment as being paralyzed. BOTOX ® Cosmetic is one of the most popular mini-procedures undergone every day. BOTOX ® Cosmetic can keep wrinkles at bay and extend the amount of time before you will need a rejuvenative plastic surgery procedure for wrinkles. BOTOX ® Cosmetic can be used in conjunction with injectable fillers such as Restylae, Hylaform, Sculptra, and others to further assist in rejuvenating the appearance. BOTOX ® Cosmetic is a very safe and proven product, so be sure you know what you are getting. Only BOTOX ® Cosmetic is approved for use in humans to diminish wrinkles and further prevent them from forming. |

What Is BOTOX ® Cosmetic Used For?
Botox ® was originally intended for the treatment of blepharospasm (eye spasm) and strabismus (misalignment of the eye). However, BOTOX ® Cosmetic was approved in 2002 for cosmetic applications to improve the look of fine lines and superficial wrinkles caused from every day facial expressions like smiling, frowning or squinting by prohibiting these movements. If you find that the early signs of aging are becoming apparent or if your facial expressions are causing premature wrinkles to appear, then BOTOX ® Cosmetic may be for you. BOTOX ® Cosmetic is also used in the prevention or smoothing of wrinkles as well, by prohibiting you from making the facial gestures that cause wrinkles. BOTOX ® Cosmetic may not remove a static wrinkle completely, it only disallows you from furrowing your brow or squinting a certain part around your eye. If your wrinkles are static then it may lessen them a bit. However, if your wrinkles are superficial it can smooth it considerably so that it appears that they have been removed. |
